'The Home And The World (Ghare Baire)' Novel Written By Ravindranath Tagore : Machine Translation Workshop & Poetry Writing

Introduction : This blog is written as a part of the Thinking Activity based on Machine Translation assigned by Yesha Bhatt regarding Ravindranath Tagore's autobiographical novel 'Ghare Baire' (1916) which was originally written in Bengali language and later translated in the English language by the author's nephew Surendranath Tagore in 1919.

After reading of the novel, we were given an interesting activity.

In this activity, we were asked to write anything in form of paragraph, prose, poem, or lines in English or our native languages - either in Hindi or in Gujarati, and then translate it on Google Translate in Bengali language; after this activity, the Machine Translation Workshop was organised on 2nd September, 2022 wherein Buddhiditya Shankara Das was virtual prolocutor. She guided the students who had translated their write-ups in Bengali language in Google Translate tool.

After the completion of the workshop, we were asked to write our first names in Bengali language with the help of Google Translation tool.

The Poem Written by Me : 'Nature' :

Nature

I went to Sky,

It blessed me with space to play...(1)

I went to Wind,

It blessed me with breath to live..(2)

I went to Fire,

It blessed me with warm and light...(3)

I went to Water,

It blessed me with satiation...(4)

I went to Woods,

It blessed me with fruits & fiery-fuel...(5)

I went to humans,

They asked me caste, creed, race, religion, and finance...(6)

Is the nature of the earth and the human verily same?

Or does the mortal have no heart, yet pretend to be sane!?...(7)

I have written this poem concerning the present-day-scenario of the world through the vehicles of the Five Basic Elements successively, lastly I have mentioned the difference between the 'Nature' we see and feel in forms of river, mountains, birds, animals, plants, tress, humans, etc. and the 'Nature' or 'Temperament' of human beings, how striking and contradictory it is that humans being nature's part are parted amongst themselves on the standards of religion, race, gender, caste, creed, nationality, color, and clans!

My Experience of Machine Translation : While translating the poem in Google Translation tool, I found that it translates words and conjugational forms, but it has no intelligence as like that of the human's which can bring about the feelings infused in the poem in translation of the original text. So, I would opine that for day-to-day conversations and casual conversational use, the machine translation is good to be relied upon, but when it comes to translating literary works, machine translations must never be relied upon.
